Miguel Molerón, Marc Serra-Garcia, Chiara Daraio Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH), Zurich, Switzerland (Dated: November 19, 2015) Abstract We theoretically and experimentally investigate visco–thermal effects on the acoustic propagation through metamaterials consisting of rigid slabs with subwavelength slits embedded in air. We demonstrate that this unavoidable loss mechanism is not merely a refinement, but it plays a dominant role in the actual acoustic response of the structure. Specifically, in the case of very narrow slits, the visco–thermal losses avoid completely the excitation of Fabry–Perot resonances, leading to 100% reflection. This is exactly opposite to the perfect transmission predicted in the idealised lossless case. Moreover, for a wide range of geometrical parameters, there exists an optimum slit width at which the energy dissipated in the structure can be as high as 50%. This work provides a clear evidence that visco–thermal effects are necessary to describe realistically the acoustic response of locally resonant metamaterials.

Background and Objective: A practical method for noise control in environments with different noise sources is designing an acoustic cabin for the workers. In this regard, this study aimed to assess the efficiency of the acoustic cabin in a typical turbine unit of a thermal power plant to provide acoustic comfort. Materials and Methods: Measurement of the noise level and spectrum, as well as v...

Thermocline layer have remarkable effects on acoustic propagation in Persian Gulf environment. So far, no comprehensive research has been conducted to explore thermocline layer, especially its characteristics including top, thickness, and thermal gradient of thermocline in Persian Gulf. Besides, effects of thermocline on underwater acoustic propagation including transmission loss and sound chan...
متن کاملAnalysis of New Laser Warning Technologies to Propose a New Optical Subsystem
In this paper, after a brief overview on laser warning system (LWS), a new structure for an optical array that is used in its optical subsystem is introduced. According to the laser threats’ wavelengths (0.5 – 1.6 µm) and our desirable field of view (FOV), we used 6 lenses for gathering the incident radiation and then optimized the optical array. Lenses’ radius, their se...
متن کاملMethod for retrieving effective properties of locally resonant acoustic metamaterials
Acoustic metamaterials can be described by effective material properties such as mass density and modulus. We have developed a method to extract these effective properties from reflection and transmission coefficients, which can be measured experimentally. The dependency of effective properties on the positions of the boundaries of the acoustic metamaterial is discussed, and a proper procedure ...
